Dr Roy and Dr Wu both also have expertise in pleural diseases and insertion and management of indwelling pleural catheters (IPC or PleurX™).
Dr Wu introduced indwelling pleural catheters in 2009 to Westmead, to assist in the outpatient management of pleural effusions due to cancer. Dr Roy has a dedicated interest and expertise in pleural diseases and underwent a 1-year fellowship in 2020 at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital in Perth, with one of the world’s leading pleural disease experts, Professor Gary Lee, and is currently involved in multicentre research involving pleural diseases.
Pleural procedures (pleural tap, chest drain insertion or IPC insertion) may be performed as a day-only procedure at Westmead Public Hospital or as part of an elective admission to Westmead Private Hospital. If an IPC is inserted, community nurses will be organised to assist you with ongoing drainage when you are back in the comforts of your own home.
Alternatively, an image guided pleural tap (simple drainage of pleural effusion through the chest wall) or a pleural biopsy (biopsy of the inside part of the chest wall) may be organized by our doctors at a nearby radiology practice to aid in diagnosis of your condition.
