Dr Peter Wu is one of the leading respiratory & sleep physicians in Sydney.
Qualified in both respiratory and sleep medicine, Dr Peter Wu is a FRACP trained specialist with expertise in both the diagnostics and therapeutics of respiratory and sleep disorders. He obtained his medical (MB,BS) and science (BSc (Med)) degree from The University of NSW with Honours. He trained in Respiratory and Sleep Medicine at Westmead Hospital and received The Fellowship of Royal Australasian College of Physician in 2008.
Dr Wu has a busy private practice at Westmead, as well as holding a part time senior staff specialist appointment at Westmead Public Hospital and a Visiting Medical Officer appointment at Westmead Private Hospital. Dr Wu has admitting rights to both Westmead Public and Westmead Private Hospitals. has interest and expertise in the diagnosis and management of lung cancers and is a member of the Cancer Referral Network.
As one of the leading interventional pulmonologists in Australia, Dr Wu has unique skills in diagnostic and therapeutic interventional bronchoscopy. He has expertise in rigid bronchoscopy, laser bronchoscopy, cryorecanalisation of airways and insertion and removal of both silicon and metallic stents. In 2011, he set up the EBUS-TBNA Service in Westmead Hospital and subsequently in Westmead Private Hospital in 2015.
Dr Wu has been the Clinical Lead in Bronchoscopy and Interventional Bronchoscopy at Westmead Hospital since 2016. He has an interest in innovation and multidisciplinary care and is currently piloting a program of multidisciplinary care for assessment and management of central airway obstruction. Currently, he is involved in trials of bronchoscopic lung volume reduction surgery with endobronchial valves and has previously been involved in trials involving transbronchial cryobiopsy of the lung.
In 2009, Dr Wu introduced implantable pleural catheters for outpatient management of pleural effusions due to cancer and is currently involved in ongoing trials involving implantable pleural catheters. And in 2020, he piloted and set up a pleural diseases clinic and pleural service at Westmead Hospital.
Dr Wu performs procedures weekly at Westmead Public Hospital and fortnightly at Westmead Private Hospital.
In addition to conducting medical consultation and interventional services, Dr Peter Wu is an expert on diagnostic sleep testing. Dr Wu runs a high-quality Home Diagnostic Sleep Study Service through his private rooms, which offer suspected sleep apnoea patients the option of accurate diagnostic testing in the comfort of their own homes. Dr Wu also has affiliations with the Sleep Laboratories both at Westmead Public Hospital and the Westmead Private Hospital, for those who would prefer in-laboratory diagnostic testing.
Since 2010, Dr Wu has also been running the chronic nocturnal invasive ventilation (NIV) service in Western Sydney and has expertise in management of acute and chronic non-invasive ventilation therapy. He is currently involved in ongoing trial involving NIV in motoneuron disease patients.
Dr Wu has a keen interest in teaching and education and is responsible for the training program of the advanced trainees in Respiratory & Sleep Medicine at Westmead Hospital. He has introduced many innovative concepts in teaching and education, including Bronchology and Pleural Diseases Education Session, Respiratory Failure Education Session, Interventional and Pleural Diseases Multidisciplinary Meeting and Interstitial Lung Disease Multi-Disciplinary Meetings. Amongst Dr Wu’s recent innovations in teaching and education include regular multidisciplinary training sessions for simulation in bronchoscopic safety and emergencies. Due to Dr Wu’s interest in teaching and education, he has been nominated as the Accreditation Lead in Respiratory and Sleep Medicine at Westmead Hospital and has also been awarded the Tracey Robinson Award for Excellence in Teaching in 2018.
There are numerous committees that Dr Wu is involved in, to improve the quality and the standard of care for respiratory and sleep medicine in the broader community. For example, The Agency for Clinical Interventional in developing guidelines for management of pleural diseases and neurodegenerative and neuromuscular disease. He is also involved with Enable NSW for the development of the NSW CPAP and nocturnal ventilation guidelines.
Dr Peter Wu is a member of The Royal Australasian College of Physicians (RACP), Thoracic Society of Australia and New Zealand (TSANZ), Australasian Sleep Association (ASA), European Respiratory Society (ERS), American Thoracic Society (ATS), Asian Pacific Society of Respirology (APSR), World Association of Bronchology (WAB), NSW Respiratory Interventional Network (RIN), Australian and New Zealand Interventional Pulmonology Group (ANZIP) and Pulmonary Hypertension Society of Australian and New Zealand (PHANZ).

Outside of medicine, Dr Wu is passionate about food and wines. Not only does Dr Wu enjoy fine dining, Dr Wu may accidentally tell a tale about his exploits on the Weber charcoal barbeque! Dr Wu also has a range of taste in music, both classical and modern. Dr Wu is a keen fan of football, NRL and cricket. Whenever possible, Dr Wu still enjoys travelling and enjoying the great outdoors with his family.
